Genaro’s Cafe has been an anchor in the Gallup food scene for almost 50 years. Established in 1975 by two friends, Eddie Padilla and Genaro Villanueva, the small diner tucked into a residential area started with New Mexico basics, specializing in stuffed sopapillas, salsa, homemade guacamole, and flavorful red and green chile.

Genaro’s Cafe

Though Eddie bought Genaro’s interest out decades ago, the restaurant retained his name, employing four generations of both the Padilla and Villanueva families. The cafe hasn’t changed much over the decades. They still utilize the original recipes from the Padilla and Villanueva family vaults and they are still known for their sopapillas. If you get the chance…try one. They have won awards from both TripAdvisor and Google.

Located a few blocks from downtown Gallup, Genaro’s is open 5-days a week (closed on Sunday & Monday). They serve lunch and dinner from 11 AM – 7 PM. Like most of the good dining options in Gallup, Genaro’s gets busy during the lunch and dinner rush, especially on the weekends. However, the front and back of the house staff are on point in terms of efficient, friendly service and the food is definitely worth the wait.
