It isn't as common a sight as it was years ago, but there are still intrepid souls jumping off of Sandia Peak. Balloon Fiesta Mass Ascension
There is nothing quite like the sight of balloons taking flight before first light, like colorful fireflies illuminating the sky. The International Balloon Fiesta is the best time to witness this phenomenon on a massive scale, as close to 1000 balloons take part in the nation's largest balloon rally, which is held annually during the first week of October.

Mesa Prieta Petroglyph Project
An overwhelming conglomeration of petroglyphs discovered on private property north of Espanola has been the subject of an ongoing project to document, preserve and protect the thousands of ancient images. The Mesa Prieta Project has been actively recording the thousands of images that adorn the mesa north of Espanola, a cascade of basalt left by an ancient fissure volcano.

However, locals also had love for the diversity that makes up our communities and for the kindness of the citizens. We may be a peculiar lot, but we get along surprisingly well given the differences.
