Description
Each of these handwoven rug totes is one of a kind. The rugs are handwoven by local weavers. Most are wool, some are synthetic blends. Dimensions vary based on the rug. Totes are made without using scissors…stitching only, maintaining the integrity of the rug. This preserves the integrity of the weaver’s work, while transforming the rug into a bag that is beautiful, practical, unique, and useful.
Collaboration Between Kestrel Leather & Local Navajo Weavers
The price varies based on the price paid for the rug. Most of the rugs are a style known locally as a “Gallup Throw.” Historically, the “Gallup Throw” were considered less valuable, because they can be woven faster, with simpler designs. However, the skills involved in this time-consuming, laborious tradition stretch back generations in this area. Often the weaving a rug starts with raising sheep. Seriously, it’s a long process.
Bags come with a reinforced floor that is removable if not needed. Handles are leather and chosen to match the personality of the bag. Most rugs are made from 100% wool. Each rug/bag has its own personality and spirit of the weaver made into it. These aren’t produced as much as they used to be and their stock will eventually run out. Get them while you can! All are one-of-a-kind. What I have in stock changes regularly. Prices run from $350-$450/tote, depending on the rug.
