Description
This impressive eagle kachina by Hopi/Laguna carver Ray Jose features impeccable wood carving. The Eagle Kachina is designed with beautifully carved feathers atop its head and along its sides and back, all painted in white, brown, and black. One feather atop its head also features orange and yellow. The eagle is perched atop a wooden base, its head craned to one side and body leaning forward, with face painted turquoise and black and its beak yellow and black. The eagle’s front features clothing carved in geometric designs, painted yellow, black, white, red, and green. Sashes run down the side at the back of the piece, painted turquoise, red, black, green, and white.
The eagle appears to be standing atop several heads of other kachinas, including four long hair and an ogre, while the base is carved with five mudheads, all painted orange, black, red, and green.
The eagle represents strength and power. He is the ruler of the sky and the messenger to the heavens.
