The Land

As you drive down the lane you enter the bosque (woods) filled with cottonwood trees, casting lush shadows on the grass. During the summer months, a field of delicate white flowers, called Yerba Mansa, greets guests with an intoxicating aroma. There is a garden in the backyard, supplying fresh herbs and produce. The heated pool, perfectly situated near shade trees, lets you relax out of the sun. Regardless of the season, there are many places to sit and absorb the natural serenity.

Morning Star Bed and Breakfast in CorralesThe Property

The home is adobe, Spanish for mudbrick. Adobe bricks are created by combining mud and organic material in rectangular forms, small enough that they can quickly air dry without cracking. The dried bricks are used for contruction, using adobe mud to bond the individual blocks. There is no standard size, with substantial variations over the years and in different regions. Architecturally, the home is pueblo revival style, a uniquely American architecture style pioneered by John Gaw Meem. It retains heat in the winter and cool temperatures in the summer. The brick floors are set on sand, a step up from the historical dirt base. Soft, rounded walls can be seen throughout. The home is luxurious, with New Mexican vigas, latillas, portals, and plaster walls in the old tradition. There is just something special about sleeping in a home constructed from adobe.

Leaving the roadway and turning onto Chaparral Lane, the canopy of ancient gnarled Cottonwood trees gives one the sense of entering a very special place. And Morning Star B&B truly is a very special retreat, an escape from the stress and constraints of today. The simple architecture, refined décor and spacious lawns beautifully captures the historical sense of the old Southwest. Carol and John, our hosts, are most gracious, warm and welcoming. Visiting with them made our stay so much more than we could have hoped for… they have imbued a spirit of peace and serenity throughout. Our room was quiet, comfortable and comforting. And John’s breakfasts are to die for; we look forward eagerly to our next visit! ~ Ann and Brad Fischer
