Kokopelli’s Cave is built into the vertical cliffs of the 60 million year old Ojo Alamo sandstone, overlooking the beautiful La Plata river valley 300′ below. The cave is man made cave. Originally, the owner, who is a consulting geologist, intended to create a unique office. When that plan didn’t materialize, he decided to convert the space into a bed and breakfast.
The cave is 70′ below the surface, approximately 1700 square feet. The entrance is located in the cliff face and is reached by walking down a sloping path and steps cut into the sandstone along the pathway. From the Cave and the cliff tops, the sunset views over the river valley are spectacular.
Cave Layout
The Cave consists of a master bedroom, living area, replica Native American kiva, dining area, full kitchen and bathroom, with rock walls incorporating a waterfall shower and Jacuzzi tub. There are two porches with sliding glass doors; one off the main entrance and the other off the master bedroom. With the exception of the bedroom and bathroom, all the rooms are located around a large central sandstone pillar which separates the cave into its various component rooms. The temperature in the Cave stays between 68° and 73° year around. Since there is no elevator, it is wise to pack light.
They do NOT allow pets, because they feed the local “critters,”including squirrels, chipmunks, ring-tail cats, and hummingbirds. Smoking isn’t allowed.

We recently stayed at Kokopelli’s Cave and it was hands down one of the best trips we ever took. My only regret is we didn’t stay longer. We did 3 days, 2 nights. It was truly spectacular and we had amazing sunsets, romantic dinners, great views and so much more. While we didn’t want to leave the cave, another highlight was De Na Zin Wilderness and Bisti Badlands (2 different locations). Both wilderness and no cell signal but some of the most amazing views and sights I’ve never seen anything like it! ~ Dawn Farral
This is an absolute must for your bucket list. We had a magical time here. The cave is really cool and quiet with a lovely view but the best part is all the rocks and art left behind by previous guests and reading the guest book. There’s even a scavenger hunt a guest created. At night the stars were incredible and we heard an owl and saw a bat. It was fun watching the chipmunks and squirrels eating during the day too.
The hot tub took hours to fill but was very pleasant. The amenities include everything you could need for a comfortable stay. What a fun and special place created by special people. I don’t recommend this if you have really bad knees though as it’s quite a steep hike down to the cave entrance. We went without kids but it would be a great place for kids too. ~ Robyn Verdugo
EXCELLENT and UNIQUE! Very clean and has laundry accessories on site. Only one room, so it’s like having a cave to yourself. Gorgeous views and fantastic ambience inside. Really something that needs to be experienced in person, there are no words to adequately describe how beautiful this place is. ~ Kasandra Natewa
