I am always on the lookout for good chile, where “good” is defined as both flavorful and spicy. One of my personal favorites in Gallup, New Mexico is Gordo’s Café, a small, casual, family-owned diner in downtown Gallup at 800 W Coal Ave.
Gordo’s has been sating appetites and chile cravings in Gallup since 1970. The current owner was a Gallup police officer who went by the call name “Gordo.” Fifty years later, he has established Gordo’s Café as a Gallup staple for anyone who appreciates spicy New Mexican fare.
Gordo’s red and green chile are both delicious, with plenty of fire for most folks, including locals, without permanently incinerating diner’s taste buds. The servings are generous and the prices are affordable, making Gordo’s a Gallup go-to.
