A Social Media Influencer is a user on social media who has established credibility in a specific industry or area of interest. They have access to a large audience, usually on multiple social media channels, and can leverage those platforms, based on authenticity and reach, to influence consumers

 

Key Characteristics of Social Media Influencers:

 

1. They are thought leaders, typically focused on a primary topic or area of expertise.

2. They provide original thoughts, useful insight and helpful information.

3. Their words have impact, based on integrity, knowledge and passion for their topic or industry.

4. They are engaging and communicative. They interact with their followers, including answering questions and mediating any disputes that arise.

5. They demonstrate a high level of emotional intelligence, with a desire to benefit their community or industry.

 

The most effective social media influencer is the one who is acting as a brand advocate.

WHAT IS BRAND ADVOCACY?

Based on research conducted by Dr. Kathleen R. Ferris-Costa, from the University of Rhode Island’s College of Business Administration, brand advocates are 70% more likely to be perceived as a source of credible information and 50% more likely to create content that influences a purchase.

In Malcolm Gladwell’s book, Tipping Point, he identifies three unique kinds of people who make social movements possible: connectors, mavens and salesmen.

 

Brand Advocates blend the strengths of a connector and a maven. They love connecting people with others of similar interests. They are information storehouses who love to share their knowledge. At their core, brand advocates like to help others. They don’t hoard information to inflate their egos; they want to be perceived as useful.

 

New Mexico Nomad was created to fulfill this role on behalf of the state of New Mexico. The goal is to increase awareness and appreciation of what New Mexico has to offer, which includes businesses and products. This isn't advertising or a free public service. It is deliberate support of great business via consistent marketing on their behalf, as an advocate and partner. The funds generated allow me to focus on audience growth and creating content that incorporates Nomad's partners while providing useful resources to others.
